How to charge the air conditioning in eight steps. Filling the air conditioning circuit with gas so it cools at full capacity is a quick but somewhat complex operation. If you take it to a workshop or quick repair center, you'll have it ready in just over 30 minutes and they'll charge you between 30 and 40 euros. You can save this amount by doing it yourself, the only downside is that you need a gas charging machine (you can rent it). Once you have it, these are the steps to follow to charge the air conditioning: Locate the circuit inlet connections. The inlet sockets of the circuit pipes have a cap that you must unscrew. The wider pipe is the low pressure one and the thin one is the high pressure one. They are usually visible, but if you can't find them, the advice is to check your car's manual. Some older models (like the Mégane II) may have a single inlet for refrigerant gas. 2. Connect the hoses to the circuit inlets. After plugging in the air conditioning charging machine, you'll need to connect the hoses to the high and low pressure inlets of the circuit. The center gauge on the machine indicates the operating pressure which should be between 8 and 10 bars. All steps (both the hoses and the machine valves) must be closed at the moment prior to connection. 3. Open the circuit access valves. Once the connection is secured, you need to open the hose valves (turn them to the right). First one and then the other, never both at once. It is important to open the valves only until the pressure gauge needles rise slightly, so that the pipe valve is not damaged and refrigerant gas is not released when you disconnect the hoses at the end of the task. 4. Self-cleaning, gas recovery and vacuum. The first work cycle of the machine is self-cleaning and old gas recovery. To do this, open the high and low pressure valves on the machine and press the green button. When self-cleaning is complete, open the green valve to recover the gas. On one side of the machine is the old oil tank: open the valve to it. After that you need to perform a vacuum. This process takes about 20 minutes on the machine. Another alternative is to search for the model in the machine's database, which will give you the charge in kilograms. 7. Fill the charging tank. Before injecting the recharge you need to open the tank valve. The oil and gas are loaded simultaneously by pressing the fill button. When the injected amount (check the screen) reaches the appropriate level, press the 'Stop' button. 8. Close the valves and check that it works. Close the HP and LP high and low pressure valves. Before putting away the equipment, do a check of the air conditioning system operation. Also close the hose valves and start the car. After charging the air conditioning, turn on the cooling system at maximum power, wait a moment and check that cold air comes out. If the air flow is low, you should check the cabin filter. If the air flow is strong, you can disconnect the machine: your work is done.
