It has use in refrigeration systems. It is the simplest type of expansion device, as it consists only of a tube (generally copper), which acts by having a large pressure drop, due to its small diameter, so that the refrigerant liquid loses most of the pressure it comes from the compressor, pressure that maintained its reduced volume; upon losing pressure, it expands at the outlet toward the evaporator. The pressure drop that the capillary causes at this point is defined based on its length, and will correspond to the pressure drop of the system between the condenser and the evaporator.
