It is used in refrigeration systems. It is the simplest type of expansion device, as it consists only of a tube (generally copper), which works by having a large pressure drop, due to its small diameter, so that the refrigerant liquid loses most of the pressure coming from the compressor, pressure that maintained its reduced volume; by losing pressure, it expands at the outlet toward the evaporator. The pressure drop caused by the capillary tube at this point is defined as a function of its length, and will correspond to the pressure drop of the system between the condenser and the evaporator.
